Can you visit Estonia for 6 hours? Yes you can!
From Riga you can take a 4.5 hour bus journey to explore the medieval beauty of Tallinn. Tallinn was a beautiful surprise, with its cobbled streets, old buildings and medieval theme throughout. This is one place that should be included in your list of places to visit in Europe. I had never even heard of Tallinn and I am so glad I took a day out of my trip to Riga to explore this wonderful place.
I booked my bus ticket the night before through Lux Express. By registering for one of their discount cards I was able to get my bus ticket for 30 euros return, so the extra time it took to register was so worth it. The journey took 4.5 hours, and by getting the bus at 7am I was in Tallinn for 11.30am. A great time to arrive in order to spend a whole day exploring. Don’t be put off by the 4.5 hour journey, by travelling with Lux Express you are able to travel in comfort. With leather seats, free WiFi and charging sockets. You can even spend a little bit more and receive more leg room in the luxury seats at the back of the bus. I would definitely recommend this bus company, the staff were friendly and we left on time and got to Tallinn exactly the time stated. I got the return bus back to Riga at 6pm which got me back in Riga for 10.30pm. The bus’s departure times are perfect times, early enough for a full days exploring and not too late back. There are also a number of bus’s throughout the day. Lux Express also travel to a number of other places around Latvia, but keep in mind for places like Russia you need a visa, so plan ahead.
I arrived in Tallinn with no set plan of what to see, I simply spent the day walking around the cobbled streets, exploring the old buildings and taking in all the medieval sites. I found this to be a great way to explore a new place in 6 hours. Every corner you turn in Tallinn there is something great to see, so many medieval buildings and cute shops and restaurants. When you first walk into Tallinn from the bus station the first thing you see is a form of a castle, which is the entrance into the Old Town, this definitely made me realise that I was going to love this place. After you walk through the entrance of the Old Town around the corner you come to a beautiful cobbled square surrounded by lots of lovely restaurants, this is definitely the place to go and eat, and a perfect spot for some lovely pictures. Although I was only there for 6 hours I feel I had enough time to get a feel for Tallinn, I would recommend just a day here as it is not that big of a place.
