Beautiful Santorini! The very top of my bucket list is officially ticked off and I can honestly say I did not want to leave. After stalking pictures of Santorini for so long it definitely did not disappoint. Although I only got to spend 3 days here, it was plenty to fit in everything that this little place, I keep calling heaven has to offer. I spent the most of my trip constantly walking around with a great big smile on my face and muttering ‘wow’ to myself.
With its white buildings, blue domes, bright cobbled floors and friendly locals this is a place that really will brighten up your life. The cleanest and brightest place I have ever visited. Set on a cliff side over looking the bluest water I have ever seen. The white buildings can be seen for miles with the sun bouncing off and making the water glisten.
Honestly Santorini is definitely a place to add to your bucket list (crazy if it is not already on there)
Anemomilos Hotel Oia
When booking your trip to Santorini I would definitely recommend staying in Oia, the most romantic spot in Santorini, with the famous sunrise and sunsets. When I booked my trip to Santorini there was no question on which area I would stay in. I would 100% recommend Anemomilos Hotel. The top reason for my recommendation is Dimitris. As I was travelling on my own he made sure I was able to get to the hotel safely, the communication prior to my trip was great. I actually had to change my flight out which meant that I was arriving at 2am at the hotel instead of 8am. He had already organised an early check in for me for my arrival of 8am. So as I was now arriving at 2am I had to find an extra nights accommodation.
Dimitris organised a taxi pick up from the airport to the hotel, he met me off the bus at 2am to show me to a room he had organised for me in another hotel, as Anemomilos was full for that night. He even spent time in the early hours talking me through maps and places I should visit. He even let me leave my bag at Anemomilos for the day when I went to the reception at 8am. Again taking time to point me in the right direction on the map for where I wanted to be for that day of exploring Oia. Dimitris is very knowledgeable and as I wanted to do a boat tour while I was in Santorini he talked me through all the options and the best one to book. He took the time to book this boat tour for me. When I arrived back to the hotel after my first day he had already taken my bags to the room and took the time to ask how my first day was.
Dimitris is very friendly and I found myself paying him a visit in reception every morning to tell him what my plans were for the day, and when I arrived back at the hotel I would go and tell him how my day was. Nothing was too much trouble for Dimitris and he enjoyed hearing all about my adventures.
Anemomilos is a great hotel, the rooms are spacious and my room had a great little balcony that looked out over the sea and had a pool view. The pool area of the hotel was lovely and clean, lots of sun loungers. The rest of the staff here were very friendly. The restaurant is big with lots of food on offer, I only had breakfast one morning but I wish I had eaten here more.
The location is fantastic. Only 30 minute taxi ride from the airport. Dimitris sorted my taxi pick up from the airport which cost 35 euros which I thought was great. On the way back to the airport I tried the bus out, one bus to Fira and one bus from Fira to the airport cost no more than 5 euros. When at the hotel to reach the other side of Oia takes no more than a 30 minute walk. A few minutes of walking from the hotel gets you to the restaurants and shops. There is a supermarket just opposite the hotel and also a bus stop which was very handy. When in Oia you can take a lovely walk to Fira which takes around 3.5 hours, the start of this walk is just across the road from Anemomilos.
I can honestly say I am so happy I chose to stay here. I loved everything about this hotel. I would love to stay here again. A big thank you to Dimitris for all your help and being so welcoming to me 🙂
With its white buildings, white streets, blue domes and blue sea Oia is the place to stay when visiting Santorini. Known for its romantic sunrises and sunsets there is no other place to be. The streets are narrow and are filled with cute shops, and restaurants with some of the best views. People are so friendly and welcoming, specially for someone travelling on their own.
I spent my first day just walking the streets of Oia and taking in all it has to offer. As this has been at the top of my bucket list since forever I found myself saying ‘wow’ a number of times. I made sure I was up early to walk the quiet streets. From Anemomolis hotel it only takes a couple of minutes until you are where you want to be in Oia.
I absolutely loved that Oia is set on a cliff side so walking into the main part of Oia you have the gorgeous view of the sea to your left. The most beautiful view you could ever imagine seeing. The sun bounces off the sea and the white buildings and makes Oia such a bright place to visit.
If you continue walking straight through Oia you come to the famous windmills with breathtaking views over the ocean. Make sure you head to the castle for even more incredible views of Oia for a higher view point. This is also the place for the famous sunset that gives you the best views of the skyline of Oia. As you can see from the pictures, even in April the weather here is beautiful and very warm, so in peak time summer I imagine it to be too warm. Oia is pretty quiet until the boats bring people over, specially for the sunsets. So I recommend that if you want certain pictures you are best to get there early morning to avoid the ques of people. Specially at the famous blue domes.
Sunset Oia boat tour
One thing I really wanted to do while in Oia was to take a boat tour around the island. I booked through Sunset Oia and chose to do a morning tour over a sunset tour. Simply because I had been told that it gets pretty cold on the sunset tour, specially when the sun goes down. My tour was from 9.30am-2.30pm. The tour cost 85 euros and included hotel pick up and drop off and unlimited food and drink. This was definitely worth the money, you get to see the volcanoes. Jump in the hot springs, see the beaches, the lighthouse and amazing mountains. This was definitely a great way to see more of Oia.
What I loved about this tour was that there was only about 15 people on the boat so it wasn’t crowded at all. Enough room for everyone to have a nice place to lie down in the sun. Food was prepared on a bbq on the boat and you get a choice of which meat you would like. There was also vegetarian options. This tour caters for all. The staff were excellent, they gave you information on what you was seeing, brought you unlimited drinks throughout the tour and were happy enough to take pictures for everyone. They really look after you and give you such an enjoyable experience.
I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone visiting Oia, and at only 85 euros you wont find any better experience.
Oia to Fira
The walk from Oia to Fira takes around 3.5 hours and the views you get are so worth it. The start of the walk is just across the road from hotel Anemomilos. Make sure you wear sensible shoes as the cliffs are very rocky ( I definitely did not wear sensible shoes)
I would definitely recommend starting this hike early in the morning as it gets very hot later on. I started this at 8am so I arrived in Fira for lunchtime, even in the morning I could feel how hot it was. The views are just amazing, from full views of Oia to views of the surrounding towns. The higher you get the more blue the water seems and just does not seem real. Santorini is so beautiful even the higher you hike. I would recommend doing this hike, you see so much more of Santorini. I had never seen any posts about this part of Santorini and I am so glad I took the advice from Dimitris from my hotel, to make sure I spent time doing this hike.
I did not spend much time in Fira, I was not a fan of how touristy it was, with all the souvenir shops, it was far too busy even early in the afternoon. So when I finally reached Fira I stayed for a late breakfast then got the bus back to Oia. The bus only cost around 2 euros.
Food in Oia
Terpsi N Oia
I found myself finding the best place for food and a view just up from the famous 3 domes. At this restaurant you can sit over looking the domes and looking out onto the sea. This is such a great place to sit and take in the amazing views. I enjoyed the deserts they had on offer with a nice cocktail or a beer. The staff are so friendly here.
Visit here for the most amazing views of the famous three domes.
I stumbled on this gem by spotting a sign pointing me down to a side street to a Greek Tapas. I love Tapas so I had to go and have a look. This place is really busy so possibly best to ring for a big party. They have a great spot for seating outside.
Santorini has been on the top of my bucket list for so long and it did not disappoint. What an amazing place to visit. I would definitely love to visit here again.
